b/t 16th & 17th Streets
It's crazy to imagine opening a new restaurant in the midst of a global pandemic, especially when the restaurant industry in NYC has been hit so hard. So I was excited to come across Chito Gvrito on Yelp...new restaurant, new "Around the World" country, and two words: KHACHAPURI AJARULI!
Khachapuri Adjaruli: Open-faced Georgian cheese bread, baked egg, cultured butter
It's hard to go wrong with melted cheese and bread. This is my 4th time having this dish (twice at restaurants and once baked by yours truly!), and this wasn't my favorite version of it. But my feeling is...if you ever see this on a menu, GET IT!
Chkmeruli - Crispy Whole Spatchcocked Poussin in Creamy Garlic Sauce
Well, this one is complicated. Based on the description and the price ($26), I was expecting a whole spatchock chicken. Doesn't seem so far-fetched. But as you can see from the photo above, what was served was 5 large chunks of chicken breast with no sides. The complicated part is that the creamy garlic sauce was out of this world, and the chicken was incredibly tender. Not sure what the disconnect is, but if you know what to expect, then...GET IT
Aubergine Rolls - Eggplant with Walnut Fenugreek Garlicy Paste and Fresh Pomegranate
This dish had rave reviews on Yelp, and sounded really interesting. But I didn't really love the flavor of the walnut and the fenugreek. FORGET IT

Nine years ago (gulp), I had a long stay-cation, and thought it would be fun to try a lot of new restaurants with cuisines from around the world. If I couldn't travel abroad, at least I could eat like I was. So I started a restaurant list I called " Around the World (Without Leaving the 5 Boroughs) ." Fast forward to 2020. COVID. Quarantine. Ugh. Minus a handful of daytrips, I've been in NYC since it all started. And since there's no prospect of traveling any time soon, I figured now was the perfect time to start a new restaurant list..."Around the World: Quarantine Edition." Hoping this will help me feel like seeing the world, or at least tasting it, all without even leaving the couch! Plus, it feels good to have a reason to venture away from my standard neighborhood spots. I'll be working on filling in the 50 most popular cuisines from restaurants that offer takeout/delivery in Manhattan. Click through to check out what I ordered, photos, and
Thai Villa Flatiron 5 East 19th Street b/t Broadway & 5th Avenue Website • Yelp • Facebook • Instagram (Clockwise) Pad see ew with vegetables - FORGET IT A lot of Yelp reviews said that this was a great dish, and much better than your local Thai spot's pad see ew. But this was pretty bad. It was somehow way too garlicky and bland at the same time. Pak mor puk (vegetable crepe dumplings) - GET IT These dumplings are really purple! The filling was pretty standard, but the presentation made this great. And the dipping sauce was delish. Pad Thai with chicken - GET IT Pad Thai is another standard Thai dish that can be hit or miss, but this one was really flavorful. Curry puffs - GET IT These were incredible. Definitely hand-made, not frozen, very tasty, and very filling. And (clockwise)
La Pizza & La Pasta Eataly - NYC Flatiron 200 Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street Website • Yelp • Instagram • Facebook Truffle Cena Per Due - 3 Course Eatalian Truffle Dinner I spent longer than I'd like to admit looking into dinner options for New Year's eve. Waaaayyy too long! I somehow stumbled upon this prix fixe menu from La Pizza & La Pasta from Eataly, and it seemed like a lot of great dishes...and a great deal too. It came with the choice of two appetizers (they didn't use an Italian word for this course HA), two entrées (secondi), and one dessert (dolce). (Counter-clockwise) Burrata: Liuzzi burrata, Urbani black truffle, olive oil, and Maldon salt So so good, but just wish it came with some bread or something else to accompany it. GET IT Crostone ai Tartufi: House-made wheat bread, Calabro ricotta, Urbani black truffles, and honey This was delicious, but it could have used a little more honey. Silver lining of ordering in is I got to add some of my own! GET
