Georgian: Chito Gvrito

Chito Gvrito
Gramercy
173 Third Avenue
b/t 16th & 17th Streets

It's crazy to imagine opening a new restaurant in the midst of a global pandemic, especially when the restaurant industry in NYC has been hit so hard. So I was excited to come across Chito Gvrito on Yelp...new restaurant, new "Around the World" country, and two words: KHACHAPURI AJARULI!

Khachapuri Adjaruli: Open-faced Georgian cheese bread, baked egg, cultured butter
It's hard to go wrong with melted cheese and bread. This is my 4th time having this dish (twice at restaurants and once baked by yours truly!), and this wasn't my favorite version of it. But my feeling is...if you ever see this on a menu, GET IT!

Chkmeruli - Crispy Whole Spatchcocked Poussin in Creamy Garlic Sauce
Well, this one is complicated. Based on the description and the price ($26), I was expecting a whole spatchock chicken. Doesn't seem so far-fetched. But as you can see from the photo above, what was served was 5 large chunks of chicken breast with no sides. The complicated part is that the creamy garlic sauce was out of this world, and the chicken was incredibly tender.  Not sure what the disconnect is, but if you know what to expect, then...GET IT

Aubergine Rolls - Eggplant with Walnut Fenugreek Garlicy Paste and Fresh Pomegranate
This dish had rave reviews on Yelp, and sounded really interesting. But I didn't really love the flavor of the walnut and the fenugreek. FORGET IT
